The course provides students with the following employability skills. Academic skills (literacy, numeracy, ICT skills, and communication skills) are enhanced through essay‐writing, mathematical problem‐solving and the use of ICT equipment. Students are encouraged to carry out research and information gathering for term papers and as background reading. External awareness is promoted through real world case studies. Personal development planning (target setting and time management) is also promoted. This course investigates important issues facing firms that compete in high technology industries such as computers, electronics, telecommunications and pharmaceuticals. The course emphasises the general issues involved in the creation, imitation, protection, purchase and sale of new technologies in order to create sustainable competitive advantage. Careful consideration is given to the interaction amongst the management of new technology, overall competitive strategies of the firm and corporate social responsibility. We first review the neoclassical basics of innovation and the rationale behind allowing property rights over those innovations. This leads into a discussion of intellectual property protection mechanisms and knowledge spillovers. We take the risk and uncertainty involved in the research process as important characteristic of innovation. We analyse, therefore, the strategies toward risk, discuss the evaluation of innovation projects and study the implications for the financing of innovation. This course continues with an analysis of how the incentives to innovate are related to market characteristics such as the level of competition in the market, and how the competition for innovations can be studied. Important topics are illustrated and motivated with case studies with an emphasis on corporate social responsibility.

This course is designed as an introductory course of urban economics. It covers fundamental principles developed in economics to understand the functioning/workings of an urban economy and the various aspects of urban life. Firstly, the course begins with the definition of a city, and why cities form by introducing the economics of agglomeration, and how cities interact to form the urban system of the entire economy. These factors affect all urban phenomena. Secondly, the course analyzes the internal spatial structure of a city by developing a theory of commuting, housing demand and housing production. It then analyzes transportation and land/housing issues in more detail. On transportation, we focus on the economics of traffic congestions, the rationale for congestion pricing (ERP), and the so-called fundamental law of highway congestion. The discussion on land and housing, will address various housing phenomena such as tenure choice and location. The courses will discuss the optimality of local public good provision, and connect local public finance and housing markets with land taxation. Finally, the course addresses the economics of urban planning to comprehend various urban forms that are found in different cities in the world.
The course will be taught in Chinese while the materials will mainly be in English.

Class Participation :30%
Midterm :30%
Term Project :40%
Midterm:
Please note that NO makeup examination will be provided. If you are absent from the scheduled exams, you will receive zero marks for this grade component. Please contact the instructor early if you have difficulties joining the exams.
Class Participation:
Class participation is composed of 30% of in-class interaction. Students are encouraged to speak up in class by asking or answering questions. You should ask questions if clarifications of the course materials are needed. Students who speak up regularly will generally receive an acceptable, if not an excellent rating. Students should elaborate their arguments as detail as possible when in discussion or answering questions. Answers without at least some elaborations or totally irrelevant have negative effect for this part. Refer to the Appendix for how past students have performed.
Term Project:
Students are required to undertake a term project, either individually or in group. The objective is for the students to conduct more in-depth studies to topics related to urban economics. Each group can choose a topic listed in the Appendix, or to propose a new topic and work on it upon approval by the instructor. Different groups may choose the same topic, provided that there is enough differentiation. (For example, in the case of picking cities and make comparisons, if the cities chosen are different, it is deemed a different topic.) Some examples of past group projects will be provided as a reference.
The grading consists of two parts:
(1) In-class Presentation (20%):
20 to 40 minutes by default. Each member of the group has to present.
(2) Slides (20%):
The presentation slides must be submitted to the instructor in both hard and soft copy in two weeks after the presentation. The length of the slides cannot exceed 25 slides or 2000 words. Exceeding either 25 slides or 2000 words will result in a penalty in grade. A full list of references must be included at the end and it does not count toward the page limit or word count. Proper citations are needed throughout the slides.
By the end of Week 3, each group should have chosen their topic and scheduled the date of presentation with the instructor. In the case of picking two cities and making comparisons, please specify which two cities are picked. Presentation starts from Week 4, with at most 2 groups to present per week. You are encouraged to present early. Early birds receive 5 total grade marks as bonus.
The plan here might be adjusted according to the number of students taking this course.
