評分標準
Course Evaluation Process:
Grading:
Your final grade will be based on your performance on several in-class quizzes, participation, and a final project. All grading is done on a percentage basis. The grading criteria are as follows.
Class Participation 25%
Quizzes 50%
Final Group Projects 25%
All grading is done on a percentage basis.
Class Participation:
It is essential to attend every class this semester. The participation score is calculated as the percentage of all classes held this semester. Your participation grade will be based on your class attendance. You earn 2 points when you are present at class for the roll call. You get 1.5 points when you show up late after the roll call. You have 1 point for each day you are permitted to take leave. You lose points when you miss class. Therefore, the score of class participation equals the sum of all points, divided by 36 (2 points * 18 weeks), multiplied by 100.
Quizzes:
To evaluate the students' performance, there will be two in-class quizzes. The quizzes are scheduled according to the following course outline. Each quiz has several multiple-choice and short essay questions. The covered materials in each quiz will be announced in class before the quiz. Only the quiz with the highest grade will be counted in the final grade if your grades on both quizzes are greater than 0. If you take both quizzes and both grades are greater than 60, 5 extra credits will be added to the grade of the quizzes. If you only take one of the quizzes, your final grade will be the average of the two quizzes.
Important note: There are no makeup quizzes. If you miss a quiz for an excused reason, you must contact me before the quiz. There are no exceptions to this rule. I will determine excusable absences.
Final Group Project:
The instructor will randomly assign 4 students to a project group. There are about 6 groups in this class. (The group's final number will depend on the total number of students electing this course.) The topics of the final group project will be assigned in class. All students are required to attend the presentations of the final group project. If you are absent without the permitted excuse, not only the grade of class participation but also that of the final group project will be deducted. The components of the grade of the final group project are 40% of the PowerPoint file, 40% of the presentation, and 20% of the participation in the group project. Every group has a maximum of 10 minutes to present the topic. All group members should present the project. Every group only needs to submit the PPT file in elearningv4. The due date for uploading the PPT file is 23:55, January 4th, 2027.
Academic Dishonesty: No cheating is allowed during the exam. Copying projects is also considered cheating.
Important dates

Course Description
The Bible is one of the most influential collections of texts in human history. Emerging from oral traditions among ancient pastoral and agrarian societies more than 3,000–4,000 years ago, the biblical corpus has evolved through processes of compilation, translation, interpretation, reproduction, and dissemination across continents and cultures. It has shaped religious traditions, languages, literature, art, politics, and global cultural exchange. This course explores the historical, linguistic, economic, and cultural dimensions of the Bible from antiquity to the present. Beginning with the oral traditions of the ancient Near East and the formation of biblical texts in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, the course examines how the Bible developed within imperial contexts such as the Roman Empire, and how it intersected with other monotheistic traditions, particularly Islam. A central focus of the course is the material and linguistic transmission of the Bible: manuscripts, scrolls, codices, monastic reproduction, printing, translation, and missionary linguistics. Through case studies—including early German and Dutch Bible translations, the role of Bible translation in Dutch colonial contexts, and the translation of biblical texts into Indigenous languages such as Siraya in Taiwan—students will explore how biblical translation has influenced language documentation, orthographies, and cultural change. The course also investigates the modern global circulation of the Bible through missionary organizations, Bible societies, publishing networks, and digital media. Finally, it considers how biblical narratives continue to inspire contemporary visual art, music, film, literature, and games, demonstrating the Bible’s ongoing role in global cultural production. In our exploration, we will delve into rich comparisons across various dimensions—religions, languages, media, and artistic representations—while centering our analysis on two pivotal narratives from the Bible: The Tower of Babel and Pentecost. These stories not only shaped the imaginations of artists, scholars, linguists, and the literate elite throughout history, but they also functioned as ideological frameworks that underpinned colonial practices. The Tower of Babel illustrates the themes of linguistic and cultural confusion, highlighting the complexities and conflicts that arise from diverse languages and identities. Conversely, the story of Pentecost embodies the transformative power of translation and the potential for understanding across cultural divides. Together, these narratives invite us to reflect on how language can both unite and divide, serving as a lens through which we can examine the historical and contemporary implications of colonialism in shaping cultural narratives and identities.Learning Objectives
By the end of the course students will be able to: 1. Explain the historical formation of the biblical canon and its linguistic background. 2. Identify the major languages involved in the transmission of biblical texts. 3. Analyze the relationship between religion, language, and empire. 4. Describe how translation and missionary activities influenced the development of written languages. 5. Evaluate the role of the Bible in colonial and global cultural history. 6. Discuss how biblical narratives continue to shape modern cultural media. 7. Apply linguistic and cultural analysis to historical texts and translations.授課形式

評分標準
Course Evaluation Process:
Grading:
Your final grade will be based on your performance on two exams (midterm and final), participation, and a research project. All grading is done on a percentage basis. The grading criteria are as follows.
Attendance and 20%
Quiz 1 25%
Quiz 2 25%
Final Project 30%
All grading is done on a percentage basis.
Attendance and Participation:
Attendance will be taken randomly throughout the semester. For each attendance check, students will receive 2 points for being present, 1.5 points for arriving late, 1 point for an approved absence, and 0 points for an unexcused absence. Attendance will account for 20% of the final course grade. The attendance grade will be calculated using the following formula:
Attendance Grade (%) = (Total Attendance Points Earned ÷ [Number of Attendance Checks × 2]) × 100%
Quizzes 1 and 2:
Two quizzes will cover the materials taught and discussed in class. The particular format of the quizzes will be announced before the quiz. There are no make-up quizzes. If an emergency or illness should force you to miss a quiz, contact me before the exam to make alternative arrangements. If we do not discuss the situation before the quiz date, no make-up will be given. The final grade of your quizzes is the average of the two quizzes. However, if you take both quizzes and both grades are greater than zero, 10 extra points will be added to the average of the quizzes.
Important note: There are no makeup quizzes. If you miss an exam for an excused reason, you must contact me before the exam. There are no exceptions to this rule. I will determine excusable absences.
Final project:
Students will be assigned to several groups. There are 3 to 5 students in a group. It will depend on the size of the class. The topics are listed at the end of the syllabus. Each group has a maximum of 20 minutes to present the topic by using PowerPoint slides. The last week of the class is arranged for the presentation. All students should attend the presentations—no excuse for the absence. The grades of class participation and the final project will be discounted for the student who is absent from the presentation.
Academic Dishonesty: No cheating is allowed during the exam. Copying projects is also considered cheating.
Important dates
Quiz 1: Monday, November 02nd, 2026
Quiz 2: Monday, December 28th, 2026
