This course consists of three parts. The first part introduces the foundations of applied econometric analysis, including statistical inference, ordinary least squares, regression specification, control variables, functional forms, and the interpretation of estimates and uncertainty. The second part covers major methods for causal inference, including instrumental variables, difference-in-differences, event studies, and regression discontinuity designs. The third part introduces selected tools for empirical research, including binary-outcome models, panel data, high-dimensional fixed effects, PPML, and gravity estimation. Throughout the course, students will use R and AI-assisted workflows to analyze real and simulated data, replicate selected empirical studies, assess the robustness of results, and develop practical skills applicable to master’s thesis research.

教學目標
In classical economics an agent makes decisions observing market signals, most
importantly the price, as if s/he was isolated from others. However, in real life
the result of an agent’s decision often depends also on the decisions made by
others. While an agent is still rational, in this course I want to introduce to you
how the interdependence of decisions of agents is analyzed in economics in order to
explain the (not just economic) behavior of people in such environment. And we will
learn to apply the art to a wide range of situations and have fun, just like in a game!

評分標準
Your performance, and the final grade, is evaluated by three categories of course activity
with weights assigned as follows:
Midterm Exam 100 points
Final Exam 100 points
Quizzes (5 x M) 5M points
Problem sets (20 x N) 20N points
Total 200 + 5M + 20N points
The final grade is the percentage of total earned points out of 200+5M+20N, calculated to the
first decimal place and rounded up to the nearest whole number. NOTE THAT IT WILL NOT BE
ADJUSTED IN ANY CASE. It is you who give yourself the grade, not me!!! Plan your allocation
of time rationally in order to get the grade you demand, and be responsible.
Midterm exam: It is scheduled on the 10th week at class time. There is no make-up exam. If
you have to miss the midterm exam for a legitimate reason, the weight of your final will be
increased enough to account for the missed points. You should inform your professor in advance if possible.
Final exam: It is required of all students and scheduled on the last week at class time.
Again, there is no make-up exam. If you miss the final exam FOR WHATEVER REASON, your
score will be zero. Note that I will not be able to reschedule any of the exams.
Quizzes: An online quiz is prepared after one or two topics to test your understanding and practice the analytical skill. It will be done in the class and is worth 5 points. Problem sets: There will be a problem set worth 20 points after one or two chapters. You need
to turn in your solutions at the beginning of the class a week after it is announced (usually
in class). Answers will be posted afterward. Late submission will be penalized, if not rejected!
Miscellaneous:
Disabled students
I will work to ensure that this course is accessible. If you have a handicap, I strongly
encourage you to meet with me to arrange accommodations to meet your needs.
Academic dishonesty
I follow the university policy with regard to cheating and academic dishonesty. A grade
of zero will be given for any assignment or examination in which cheating is detected.
In addition, the incident will be reported to the university.
