113-1_媒體與文化研究(上)
教學目標
This course introduces students to an understanding of the power and significance of media representations that enable us to enrich our perception of society through reading new media such as films, photos, manga, anime, and even music videos or SNS posts. It invites students to discuss these questions by exploring social movements, social issues, and activism recorded in online media. We will “read” various types of online media, together with so-called traditional literature, as texts and focus on social issues in 21st-century America. Students are encouraged to think about the power and significance of online media: How it may dim our perception? Or quite the opposite, how can such new media help us activate the framework of perception of the world and create a new perspective towards where we are? In this semester, we will explore issues of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, class, capitalism, environment, and militarization in the American context. Reading not only literature, newspapers and essays but also new media together, we will discuss the close connection between the report or record of these issues in new media representations and the history or perspective of trends, social movements as well as activism in today’s US. We will also examine how these online media seek to transform American society in a positive way by calling for their audiences’ awareness while presenting a wide array of social problems that need to be addressed.

The overall aim of this module is to enhance students’ research skills and writing ability. This module will be divided into two major parts. The first part of this course aims to provide an introduction to general research methodologies frequently adopted in linguistic studies. Students will be provided assigned journal articles relevant to the topic of each week in order to have a deeper understanding on how successful research studies were conducted. The second part will be an introduction to the basic format of a research project/master dissertation. Students will learn how to write an outline, all the linguistic features of each chapter in a dissertation, and the key information that needs to be included. It is expected that students will acquire independent research skills and become a competent researcher after successfully finishing this module.

教學目標
This course explores literature and cinema as art forms that convey unique languages, as media that reflect their cultural contexts, and as platforms that document social issues and deliver socio-political messages. This semester, the thematic focus will be on medicine and humanities. We will begin with My Sister's Keeper, exploring a mother's struggle with her daughter's leukemia and the ethical controversies of having a younger daughter, Anna, whose purpose is to save her sister. We will watch the film directed by Nick Cassavetes, read Jodi Picoult's novel, and discuss issues of donor babies, genetic engineering, and medical ethics. Next, we will read Rebecca Skloot's novel, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, and watch its film adaptation by George C. Wolfe. We will delve into the medical controversies surrounding Henrietta Lacks, whose cells contributed to significant medical advancements, such as polio vaccines and cloning. However, she and her family remained virtually unknown. Finally, we will read The Memory Keeper's Daughter, watch its film adaptation by Mick Jackson, and delve into the sadness and pathos of those who suffer from Dome Syndrome and their parents/caretakers. The class format includes lectures, in-class discussions, film screenings, and poster presentations.
