110-1_文學與電影II
教學目標
This course explores literature and cinema as art forms that convey their languages, as media that reflect their cultural contexts, and as platforms that document social issues and deliver socio-political messages. To provide a thematic focus for our in-class discussion, the instructor will focus on issues regarding medicine and humanities. Beginning with The Wit, a film performed by Emma Thompson, we will investigate the life of a terminal cancer patient. We will watch the movie, read John Donne's sonnets along with the movie script. Then, we will read Kim Edwards's novel, The Memory Keeper's Daughter, watch its film adaptation by Mick Jackson, and delve into the sadness and pathos of those who suffer from Dome Syndrome and their parents/caretakers. After that, we will read Nicholas Sparks's novel, The Notebook, watch its film adaptation by Nick Cassavetes, and probe into the mindset of a woman who has Alzheimer's disease. And finally, we will read Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, watch its film adaptation by Jack Nicholson, and examine mental patients' wellbeing and humane treatment. The class format includes lectures, in-class discussions, film screenings, oral presentations, and poster presentations.

教學目標
This course introduces students to on-going changes in postcolonial film studies. Postcolonial film scholarship has long examined films within geo-political contexts, enlightening our understanding of history, empire, and resistance in both Anglophone and Sinophone worlds. What’s new in the twenty-first century is a shift in postcolonial space, largely away from the third world to the fourth world of indigenous, marginal, subaltern struggles, in particular within settler states. This changing geographical face brings with it new conceptual vocabulary and theoretical approaches.
The first semester focuses on the topic of indigenous resistance and settler colonialism. The second semester will explore the topic of subaltern narratives and post settler-colonial reconciliation. In this first semester, we read foundational theoretical arguments, analyze films from three different settler-colonial spaces: Rabbit-Proof Fence (Australia), Utu (New Zealand), Seediq Bale (Taiwan), and draw connection and comparison between histories, themes, and perspectives.

110-1_莎士比亞與電影
教學目標
In the last decade, we have seen an explosion of Shakespeare films in the United States and worldwide. These films remind us that Shakespeare's popularity has lasted until the mid-sixteenth century and that traditional high/low culture distinctions require more critical examinations. This course will examine how Shakespeare became such a cultural icon in literature and popular culture. Although we will be learning how to analyze films, we will also be working carefully with the language of Shakespeare's plays. We will examine the way filmmakers worldwide reinterpreted Shakespeare, focusing on the cultural politics (such as gender, race, and class) that these films connote. As for the format of the course, we will consider three Shakespeare plays (The Taming of the Shrew, Romeo and Juliet, and Much Ado about Nothing) in the written text and on the screen. We will try to distinguish the places where cinematic representations have markedly altered the plays and explore how these changes refocus traditional understanding of the Renaissance texts. This course is divided into three units of lectures, in-class discussions, and film screenings. Each unit will cover a particular play, screen at least two (or more) film adaptations, and discuss various aspects of Shakespeare and film criticism along with social, economic, cultural, and political issues.

110-1_類型小說(上)
教學目標
This two-semester course introduces students to the history, conventions, and metamorphosis of genre fiction. Also known as popular fiction, genre fiction has dominated the imagination of common readers for over a century. How is genre fiction different from “literary” works? What is the appeal of popular genres and what are readers’ expectations for each genre? This course invites students to discuss these questions through exploring major genres of popular fiction: fantasy, science fiction, crime, horror, romance, and historical fiction. We will read two works for each category: a “classic” in the genre and a contemporary example. Multimedia adaptations will also be included and students are encouraged to think about the close connection between genre fiction and popular media.
In the first semester, we will examine genres in the category of speculative fiction: fantasy, science fiction, and gothic horror. Students will be encouraged to think about the common themes across these genres as well as consider their unique appeal to readers.
