教學目標
This course invites my students to explore various representations of nature in American literature. Reports and discussions in class, however, are not limited to this particular realm. Pertinent documents and references of other literature or art are especially welcome to help put in perspective the issues at stake. Hopefully, this course will not only enhance my students’ understanding and appreciation of nature and American literature, but also empower them to investigate their immediate and global environments with greater depth and ingenuity.

教學目標
This course aspires to help my students explore American literature in an interesting and profound way. Both literary texts and their social contexts will enjoy our critical attention, contributing together to my students’ appreciation of individual works as well as the literary traditions they are embedded in. In the second semester, their investigation of realism, naturalism, symbolism, modern poetry and other literary movements, hopefully, will promise enriching and inspiring experiences. Last but not the least, the students’ participation in research projects and classroom activities is expected to join forces with their reading experiences of the texts. They will be encouraged not only to savor the masterpieces individually but also to delve into their shared quintessence that explains how those classics surpass the limit of time and live on.

Practical translation problems that may be encountered during the translating process will be investigated. Relevant problem-solving strategies and techniques will be taught. Students’ translation errors in the assignments will also be examined and discussed in the lessons. In the previous semester, the focus was to translate English texts into Chinese. The major aim of this semester, however, will be the other direction, namely translating Chinese texts into English. The texts in various fields will be translated and discussed.

108-2_英美兒童文學(下)
教學目標
Children’s Literature in English aims not only to enhance the students’ English capability in general but also to equip them with profound knowledge in this specific field. The second semester of this course continues its emphasis on three major categories. Firstly, it examines further the Context of children’s literature in English, exploring especially its history, its cultural and social diversity, and various approaches to literary criticism. Secondly, this semester will find our thorough investigation of two major texts of children’s literature--Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden (1911) and E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web (1952). Hopefully, some other classics of fantasy will also engage our critical attention, if time permitting. The last but not the least essential part of this course is the students’ full participation in class. Group presentations and individual projects are designed for them to fully experience the world of children’s literature as critical readers, active performers, and creative writers.
